“Similarly to Deafbeef, I have been fascinated since art school by the work of Eadweard Muybridge. The digital artist managed to reproduce the shock that the public felt in the 19th century discovering a horse galloping using blockchain-based concepts. Recreating the same level of innovation, conceptually elevated to today's new technology is a sign that this artwork will sustain the test of time, just like Muybridge's.”

What I love about this work

Description: Deafbeef was invited to dive into the LACMA archives and was immediately drawn to the chronophotographic work of Eadweard Muybridge who developed new techniques in the 19th century to enable serial photography of people and animals in motion - images with an enigmatic quality that have been widely influential. Drawing inspiration from these photographs, the artist created two series of artworks that interact via blockchain mechanism: NOUMENON and CHRONOPHOTOGRAPH. On a time locked schedule, a blockchain tx ShutterRelease() will metaphorically capture an "observation" of a Noumenon, minting a new CHRONOPHOTOGRAPH - procedurally generated random image seeded by the blocknumber, depicting figurative/abstract motion in different phases.
